The Health Benefits of Kitesurfing – Ride the Waves to Fitness

Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing is a wind powered surface watersport using a kite and a board, which continues to grow in popularity.

Kitesurfing harnesses the power of the wind through a large parachute type kite. The kite propels the rider across the water on a small surfboard or kiteboard.

Kitesurfing only requires wind for power, and this means there are a large range of options to enjoy. These can include surfing the waves, going for big jumps, increased speeds, learning a new freestyle trick or developing a long-distance technique.

The range of equipment available is extensive and kitesurfing is possible in all wind conditions, especially when compared to windsurfing. The size of the kite is far larger than a windsurf sail, so it will start to produce power in lighter winds. As the strength of the wind increases smaller and smaller kites are used to propel the kitesurfer.

Another advantage for kitesurfing over many other similar sports, is the ease of transport of the equipment. Even the largest kites pack up to fit in a rucksack and the boards are also relatively short, ranging from around 120 to 150cm in length.

There are some spectacular locations to enjoy windsurfing, and for anyone trying kitesurfing for the first time Wingfoil Mallorca can offer equipment rentals, ideal locations and expert lessons to accommodate and enhance any kitesurfing experience.

The Health Benefits of Kitesurfing

Kitesurfing can support a wide range of health benefits.

When kitesurfing you will use your whole body. Your legs are used to control the board and push against the power of the kite, whereas your torso, especially abs and arms, are used to hold onto the kite and keep balance.

A harness is used once you get into the water which absorbs the power of the kite, and this will allow anyone to learn and kitesurf for a number of hours without becoming tired.

In addition to the physical benefits, to fully appreciate the kitesurfing experience, the rider will have to concentrate on a number of additional, peripheral factors.

Being aware of the surroundings, focusing on posture, your kite, your hands on your bar and your board will require some concentration and focus. Kitesurfers are often completely absorbed in the moment, and this can be a refreshing escape from any day-to-day thoughts.

This form of consciousness is an additional health benefit, reducing feelings of anxiety, managing emotions and improving memory.
